FRAX®

FRAX® is a sophisticated risk assessment instrument, developed to evaluate fracture risk.  It uses risk factors in addition to DXA measurements for improved fracture risk estimation.  It is a useful tool to aid clinical decision making about the use of pharmacologic therapies in patients with low bone mass.

The FRAX® tool helps to identify people who may be at risk of developing osteoporosis. Personal details (such as height and weight, medication history, smoking history and family history) are entered to predict whether someone is at risk of developing osteoporosis in the next 10 years. The risk is expressed as a percentage: for example, 10% means 10 people out of a 100, with this level of risk, will develop osteoporosis in the next 10 years.

This information can help your doctor decide whether further action needs to be taken. This may be asking you to have a bone scan, or talking to you about measures that can help prevent osteoporosis. These may be lifestyle and dietary measures, or medication.
